Activity in the Zone of Disruption: Pitney Bowes’ AcceleJet

Pitney Bowes has just announced a new product called the AcceleJet printing and finishing system. AcceleJet is a narrow-web, continuous-feed to cut-sheet, inkjet printing system capable of speeds up to 246 feet per minute (75 meters per minute) and throughput exceeding 500 letter-sized images per minute. Intended for a monthly volume range of four to ten million letter/A4 images per month, Pitney Bowes is targeting the AcceleJet at market segments such as service bureaus, direct mailers, and in-house operations in non-profits, financial services, insurance, healthcare, utilities, and government. Pitney Bowes estimates that an AcceleJet system including the controller, print engine, and finishing capable of dynamic perforation, sheeting, and stacking will have an average system selling price of $850,000.

Graph Expo Expectations

Graph Expo 2015 (September 13-16, Chicago) begins on Sunday and whether you are able to be there or not, here are a few things you should know in advance.

Who Has the Biggest Booths on the Show Floor?

One good way of assessing the level of marketing spend that an exhibitor has made on a trade show is to measure the size of their booth. InfoTrends has been doing this for shows like Graph Expo, Print, IPEX, and drupa for many years. This year, the biggest exhibitors (by square foot of exhibit space as measured from the publicly available show floor map) are shown below.

Canon, as was the case at Graph Expo 2014, has the largest booth, followed by Konica Minolta. HP is in the number three spot, up from number six last year. Xerox dropped down a spot and is followed by Ricoh, EFI, Pitney Bowes, and Standard Finishing. KIP America breaks into the top ten at number nine. Last year’s number nine, Muller Martini, is not exhibiting. The top twelve is rounded out by Kodak, KBA, and Scodix. Traditional offset vendors (including some with new digital offerings) will be exhibiting, but not in the biggest booths (KBA is the only one in the top twelve). Offset system providers with booths include Goss, Komori, manroland, Presstek, Ryobi MHI, and TKS, but not Heidelberg, which hasn’t been a Graph Expo exhibitor since 2011.

B2 Digital Presses: Market is Ramping Up in Europe, North America

The new generation of ‘B2’ format sheet fed presses from HP Indigo and several other suppliers has caused interest and excitement since their first unveiling two years ago. Today about 140 B2 presses are operating worldwide, and that total is growing. InfoTrends recently interviewed 40 current users of B2 presses and also surveyed 200 prospects for the technology in Europe and North America, in order to understand the status and outlook for B2 digital systems, which are available now from Delphax, Fujifilm, HP Indigo, and Screen, with more to come.  The results are charted and interpreted in the new report, Opportunities and Challenges in B2 Digital.

Digital Print in 2014 – Better Late than Never for B2

As we look back on the new product announcements from 2013, I have to admit that the year was largely overshadowed by drupa 2012 and the many new and exciting technologies shown there. We were especially eager to see the new B2 products enter the market in 2013, but it has proven to be a rather slow process. As analysts with many years in the industry, we experienced that launch schedules are overly optimistic side and that the actual product launches often seem to drag on forever. But the announcements from drupa 2012 seem to have taken these delays to a new dimension.

It seems that the duration from the first tech demo to  the beta test phase and then to final product is getting longer and longer. Admittedly the line between an early product demonstration and a technology demo is blurred. Many vendors take a cautious approach and label the new announcements as technology demonstrations. Also technology demoes may never end in a product at all. Still, prospective users want to know when they can expect a launch date of a new product or at least know when limited availability will start for early users. Read more »

Frankly Speaking: Drupa is All About Hope

Drupa is the largest print-related exhibition in the world. It is a cross between a world’s fair and the storming of the Bastille. It is the place where new printing technology is introduced. And much of that technology is years away.

The first thing that hits you is the sheer size of it all. It takes almost an hour to walk from one side of the messe (fairgrounds) to the other (well, at my age it does). There are the equivalent of 20 buildings filled with every kind of printing and related device on earth. And there were 170,000 people from all over the world by the mid-point of the show.

The day before the formal opening is when Heidelberg (HEI) has their traditional press conference. But they were usurped by Landa, a company that revealed a new nano graphic printing technology. In fact, HEI is partnering with Landa on a future printing device.

What’s the Real Purpose of B2-format Digital?

A recurring theme at drupa 2012 is that many of the planned digital devices are intended as B2-format offset press replacements. This is puzzling positioning. Is there really a need for digital stand-ins for very efficient offset presses? The digital market, need I remind you, is built on values well beyond mere quick turnaround and cost-effective short runs. Production digital print is best leveraged when it facilitates full process automation, electronic collation, variable data, and the use of the digital printer as a virtual document archive. Designs that lack duplexing or use traditional offset feed and delivery systems miss out on some of the most basic digital print advantages.

Delphax is taking 4-up inkjet to drupa 2012 with elan

Delphax is a long standing provider of high-end digital monochrome printers in markets focused on check, security, and book printing. Until the announcement of elan, these have all been toner-based cut-sheet and continuous feed solutions. With the trend towards color, Delphax began an initiative several years ago to develop its own color solution and is now launching elan, a 500 ipm digital full colour cut-sheet printer. As its imaging partner it chose Memjet, which provides the inkjet print heads for elan.

2012 will probably go down in history as the year of the “digital B2” drupa. This alone is exciting news for any print service provider looking for a new production tool. As an industry supplier however, it makes it more difficult to stand out with a B2-format offering. Still Delphax’s elan has a couple of exciting features that could really differentiate the product from its competition. Based on the details that Delphax has released so far these are:
– Low expected acquisition price and running costs
– High resolution
– Small footprint
– Innovative paper path
– Ability to run a fifth or sixth color or MICR

Delphax to Develop Production Color Inkjet Product Based on Memjet Heads

Over the past year there have been quite a few Memjet partnership announcements, but most have been for office or tabletop label printers. In the production document space, there was the announcement from Neopost about a Memjet partnership, but yesterday’s news from Delphax is the first time that Memjet has been linked to a company with a history of selling production document printing systems. That’s interesting news.
