At Hunkeler Innovationdays this week (February 11th to 15th in Lucerne, Switzerland), Kodak announced a new version of its Prosper high-speed inkjet printing system. The Prosper 5000XLi includes a new extended paper path, an improved transport/drying system, new more durable inks, and software improvements that better leverage existing camera/sensor feedback systems. Key to the features of the 5000XLi are items that improve quality for many applications, but particularly for high-coverage output on coated papers. For those types of applications, the optional Image Optimization Station (IOS) provides an in-line treatment (an aqueous coating) that allows users to use commodity papers instead of more expensive inkjet-treated offerings. The 5000XLi will replace the Prosper 5000XL. Upgrades will be available for current Prosper 5000 systems. The 5000XLi will be available immediately after Hunkeler Innovationdays.
Prosper 5000XLi at Mercury Print in Rochester, New York
I had a chance to see the Prosper 5000XLi running live at a user site in Rochester, New York. The site, Mercury Print (www.mercuryprint.com), has had its Prosper 5000 since July of 2011 and served as the beta site for the new 5000XL. It has also added the monochrome Prosper 1000, which was installed at the end of December.

On February 14, at the Hunkeler “Innovationdays” tradeshow in Switzerland, Xerox announced a high speed process color printing system based on phase change inkjet. While there is no indication that the new press will target packaging applications–stated targets are transactional printing, direct mail, books, manuals, catalogs and newsprint–the news highlights Xerox’s potential as an inkjet press supplier. We focus on that here, because of the high potential for inkjet presses in packaging generally, and because Xerox has already made packaging part of its overall strategy. In that regard, since 2009, Xerox has offered its Xerox Automated Packaging Solution (APS) the folding carton printing and converting system based on the Xerox iGen, and electrophotographic device.
With the above as a caution–Xerox has a color inkjet press, but it’s not for packaging–we recommend the news story from Xerox for study by alert clients. Xerox has a lot under the hood in terms of inkjet technology and the company could someday bring that technology to bear in the packaging world. In the long term, we think that an inkjet press from Xerox could be used in packaging converting. Read more »

Two recent announcements shed some light on the progress that HP has made on the development of third-party produced papers that are enhanced for use on the T300 Inkjet Web Press:
- Georgia Pacific launched a line of treated uncoated stocks using ColorPRO technology. The ColorPRO brand denotes that the papers employ an HP-developed technology that facilitates high-quality print output on HP’s T300 Inkjet Web Press. The line of papers is called Spectrum Web Inkjet and is available now in the United States. (Link to Georgia-Pacific news)
- Appleton Coated will develop coated papers for the T300 Inkjet Web Press using HP technology under the Utopia brand. These papers will include matte and dull finishes designed for textbook, publication, direct mail, and other commercial printing applications. The substrates are currently in production trials and are expected to be available in mid-2010 in North America. (Link to Appleton news)
The Georgia Pacific release was notable in that it mentioned the ColorPRO brand. The Appleton release did not. The reason behind this is relatively simple. The Georgia Pacific stocks are uncoated. The Appleton stocks are coated. In response to a question from InfoTrends HP clarified that ColorPRO as a technology and a brand is for uncoated stocks only. Appleton’s coated stocks will employ an HP-developed technology, not ColorPRO, and therefore will not be part of the ColorPRO technology brand. Read more »
