For several years, InfoTrends has used the term “Compact interchangeable lens camera (CILC)” to describe the relatively new class of smaller cameras with a removable lens that compete with Digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras. Now, according to InfoTrends’ latest U.S. Interchangeable Lens Camera Market Study, it seems that consumers generally prefer the term “Digital interchangeable lens camera (DILC)” to describe these cameras.

When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going

With the digital camera market struggling this year, it could be very easy for camera vendors to pull back their marketing and sales efforts and try to weather out the storm by controlling their costs. However, this would be the worst thing that they could do. “Out of sight, out of mind,” as the saying goes. A better approach to the situation should be, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

Canon and Samsung are showing that they are not going to roll over and let the market dictate to them what the outcome for the year will be. InfoTrends estimates that, on average, there will be over one million cameras sold a month this year. Although this number has been much higher in recent history, it is still an impressive quantity of product being sold. Some company is going to sell these cameras and it appears that Canon and Samsung are saying, “Why not us?”

Some Camera Shopping Advice for Friends (and Santa)

The lead up to the Holiday gift giving season is always a busy time as people start making out their gift giving lists or their own wish list for Santa. Being an analyst that tracks camera phones and digital cameras, this is also a busy time of year for me as I start getting emails, phone calls and text messages from friends asking me for camera buying advice. Since Thanksgiving I have already received many emails and texts from friends saying they need an opinion about what type of camera to buy.

I will admit I like being the one my friends and relatives turn to for an educated opinion about cameras. That role also carries some pressure with it, given the hundreds of camera models that can be found for sale from an online retailer or traditional brick and mortar stores. So as I prepare for the “what is the best camera to buy?” question I thought some of my ponderings would be helpful for others looking to answer the very same question.

Canon EOS SL1 camera bolsters the argument of a converging DILC market

The new Canon EOS SL1 camera is a welcome addition to the DSLR market. Its small size and light weight help it to stand apart from other DSLRs in the market and put it in a very competitive position again compact interchangeable lens cameras (CILCs).

Touted as the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR that uses an APS-C size sensor, the EOS SL1 hits back at the argument that DSLRs are too big, bulky, and heavy. Now, photographers who want a lighter, smaller camera body that is compatible with Canon’s full line of existing EF lenses have a clear choice. (While the Canon EOS M compact interchangeable lens camera is smaller and lighter, it requires a lens adapter in order to use the EF lenses.)

CILCs are Catching on Among Pro Photographers – But What’s in a Name?

Terminology within the digital photography market can be ambiguous, especially when the industry has not yet standardized naming conventions. For example, consider the DILC (digital interchangeable lens camera) market and its subcategories. DILC is an umbrella term that incorporates all cameras with interchangeable lenses, but it can be further divided into two major categories–digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras and compact interchangeable lens cameras (CILCs).

At this time, CILCs are primarily separated from DSLRs based on the exclusion of a mirror box, a smaller size, and a lighter weight. Nevertheless, product definitions are still undergoing changes and the lines are blurring all the time. To this point, products like Panasonic’s Lumix GH3 do not contain a mirror box but are roughly the same size and weight of a traditional DSLR. Over time, InfoTrends believes that the distinction between CILCs and DSLRs will disappear, and interchangeable lens cameras will simply be referred to as DILCs. The cameras in this category would then compete head-to-head in terms of features, functionality, and price. Right now, however, the DSLR and CILC subcategories still exist.

According to InfoTrends’ 2012 report entitled Digital Imaging and Professional Photographers, the vast majority of pro photographers currently own DSLRs. Although other camera types are also in use, none are nearly as popular as DSLRs. At the same time, however, the share of professional photographers who reported owning CILCs more than quadrupled year-over-year, rising from just 11% in 2011 to over 49% in 2012. Read more »

Photo Plus 2012 – The “Go To” Event for the East Coast

The annual PDN PhotoPlus Conference & Expo (PPE) was held October 24-27, 2012 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City. Since, several of the leading companies in the photo industry have U.S. headquarters in the New York metropolitan area, the PhotoPlus Expo is a great “home show” for many industry insiders. PPE draws a healthy contingent from the surrounding metropolitan region and has become a “go to” event. The show drew nearly 24,000 attendees and 250+ exhibitors filled the exhibit hall floor.
