Next Up for Vendor Shows: Xeikon Café in Belgium

At this time of year vendors and users of digital print technology have a spate of events that qualify as vendor-specific tradeshows, ones hosted or sponsored by individual equipment suppliers. Among the best known are two that just took place, namely Hunkeler Innovation Days (February 20-23 in Lucerne) and Dscoop (March 1-4 in Phoenix, Arizona, for HP users). A third event, coming soon, is a pure play in digitally printed packaging and well worth visiting—the Xeikon Café that will take place in Belgium on March 27-30.

KBA VariJET 106 & The Making of ‘The B1 drupa’

KBA-Sheetfed Solutions, a division of German press manufacturer KBA, announced recently it will offer a B1 sheet fed inkjet press called KBA VariJET 106 for printing folding cartons. The new press will be built on the platform of KBA Rapida 106, a sheet fed offset press, and on an inkjet print engine and DFE by Xerox Impika. Highcon Ramps Up: Lots to Show at drupa 2016

Highcon, the digital finishing system supplier, recently held a three day event at its headquarters in Israel to show technology developments that it will soon unveil at drupa 2016 in Germany. The short version of our report on this “pre-drupa” gathering:

  • Since its debut at drupa 2012, Highcon has placed 25 of its “Euclid”  and “Euclid II” devices globally
  • In 2016 it will add a new portfolio of digital cutting and creasing systems and related tools, the Highcon Beam, Highcon Euclid III and the Highcon Pulse.
  • These products will give carton converters and other printers new access to Highcon’s unique finishing, and also to two applications new at Highcon, 3D printing and variable data cutting.

Label Expo Preview: What to Look for in Brussels Next Week

Label Expo, the premier tradeshow for the label industry, will take place September 29 to October 2 in Brussels. Now decades old, this is the show that never seems to fade, and also one where the role of digital printing technologies always seems to grow. InfoTrends will attend and make a detailed report about it to clients but for now we offer a quick preview of what we expect to see:

A huge HP booth: The stand’s core equipment will be HP Indigo WS6800 (labels and other applications) and 20000 (a 30” web, for flexible packaging and for labels also), but there will be many other products. InfoTrends Launches the “Ultimate Guide” to Color Digital Presses for Label, Package Printing

Landa Lifts Curtain Just a Bit: “Nanography” “NanoInks” at drupa 2012

Analysts predicting the developments at drupa 2012 have fixated on Landa Corporation of Israel, the technology developer headed by Benny Landa, the founder of Indigo. Landa publicized its planned drupa booth back in January, but did not reveal much, except to say the company would have a really new technology on display, ostensibly a jetting method that would rely on specialized inks and be a highly economic and productive method for use in commercial, packaging, and publishing markets. Europe: U.K. Recycled Packaging Leader D. S. Smith Buys SCA of Sweden

Insight about basic forces in the packaging markets of Europe comes from this story: On January 17th, Britain’s DS Smith (UK) announced it is buying the recycled packaging operations of SCA of Sweden for about $2 billion. The goal of DS Smith, already a jumbo supplier of packaging in Britain and elsewhere, is to win more business from the world’s top consumer goods companies, especially in Northern Europe where its main consumer goods customers already operate. In his statement about the deal, DS Smith CEO Miles Roberts said that customers like Procter & Gamble, Nestle, Kraft, Reckitt Benckiser, and Unilever have encouraged his company to offer more recycled packaging across Europe. The deal will make DS Smith one of the largest corrugated suppliers in Europe, with close to 3 million metric tonnes of capacity. Read more »
