Nuance Announces eCopy ShareScan 6.0

On May 17th, Nuance announced eCopy ShareScan 6.0, an update to their popular capture and workflow solution. eCopy ShareScan offers sophisticated tools while retaining simplicity for any customer. Nuance has added new features for productivity and security, designed with the prevalence of ad hoc capture, mobile workers, and the need for custom workflows in mind. To serve those looking to automate, Nuance eCopy 6.0 features innovations in the mobile space, “learning worker” level workflows, easy deployment and maintenance with added security features, and extensive integration with Microsoft Office 365.

Mobility

Nuance eCopy can now be integrated with Nuance Business Connect, the mobile application for iOS and Android. Subsequently, users can capture a document with a mobile camera and access workflows via mobile devices with support for form data entry and document signatures. These documents can then be processed via Nuance eCopy to content management systems, email services, collaboration tools, and more. This allows remote workers to work as effectively as those in the office.

Workflows

The Visual Workflow Editor and Personalized Workflow combine to make workflow design simple and easy for every worker. At the administrator level, the Visual Workflow Editor offers a guided building experience, drag and drop functionality, intuitive possible steps, and a built-in test simulator. The Personalized Workflow allows any user to configure connectors via an easy to use wizard for custom “send to folder” workflows. RapID remembers user’s preferred or recent settings, simplifying repetitive document tasks.

Deployment and Security

To ensure eCopy serves each aspect of an organization, Nuance has considered concerns like support and security. To keep servers from being overwhelmed, eCopy enables industry hardware load balancers like Citrix Netscaler. Nuance has also added several security features. Content-based security warnings monitor scanned documents and flag predetermined classified information via an email. Enterprise-grade security standards, TLS 1.2 and SNMP v3, are now supported as well. The integration with Windows Active Directory also furthers security, ensuring only authorized users have access via secure session log-on. For those already using eCopy, upgrades are as simple as installing eCopy 6.0 over eCopy 5.0, keeping all saved workflow settings.

The trend toward business process automation is highlighted in the InfoTrends Future of Office Print study, which suggested that more organizations are discovering the benefits of document software solutions. Nearly two thirds of respondents indicated that their companies have taken steps to remove, simplify, or automate document-related business processes. Nuance answers that growing demand with this new version of eCopy, a scalable solution to simplify document workflows in and out of the office. Nuance eCopy ShareScan 6.0 will be available to partners in June, and satisfies the needs customers looking to gain control of document processes, empower mobile workers, and manage costs without sacrificing security.

Kodak Alaris Partners with Google to Build an IoT Strategy

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the millions of smart devices that are connecting with each other, and we see it impacting and infiltrating the document solutions industry.  Last year, Google launched Brillo and Weave, the key parts of their new IoT platform, to enable easier device setup, phone-to-device-to-cloud communication, and user interaction from mobile devices and the web. Google is presenting Weave as “a solution for everyone:” OEMs, app developers, and end-users. With Weave, OEMs can build interoperable communications into their devices, build on Brillo, or add the Weave capability library to their existing OS.  App developers can use Weave to extend the reach of their iOS and Android apps by building one app to control multiple devices at home or work, and leveraging Google services such as voice actions. Adobe Expands eSign Capabilities and Partnerships

In April 2015, Adobe launched Adobe Document Cloud, their newest cloud offering, giving users the ability to manage documents at home, and in the office across devices. With this launch several upgrades were made to Acrobat DC, new Mobile Link and mobile apps were made available, and eSign Services (formerly Adobe EchoSign) were released packaged with every subscription of Acrobat DC.

Lexmark International Set to Acquire Kofax Ltd

In what seems to be shaping up as an exciting year in document and information technology, late yesterday it was announced that Lexmark International would seek to acquire Kofax Ltd for approximately $11 a share, or $1 billion. Upon news of the agreement, Kofax shares spiked 36%.  This is most certainly a disruptive move by Lexington, Kentucky-based Lexmark, and it positions them to be a “powerhouse” in intelligent capture and document processing while adding sophisticated platform capabilities for BPM.

Lexmark’s acquisition spree kicked off in 2010, when the company acquired Kansas-based Perceptive Software (for a reported $280 million) with the goal of transitioning from a hardware-centric vendor to a solutions provider. Perceptive Software was a major provider of ECM software and solutions with specific strength in the higher education, healthcare and government sectors and its Image Now software platform offers a broad range of workflow solutions.

The marriage offered clear synergies for growth at a time when Lexmark’s revenue had slumped following the decline of the inkjet market.  Lexmark’s subsequent exit from the inkjet business reaffirmed the importance of new revenues streams. Lexmark, with its global infrastructure of direct & indirect channel for printing hardware, was an excellent fit for Perceptive with its advanced software solutions and vertical expertise. Both came from positions of strength in the medium sized business sector reaching up to the enterprise.

 

 

 

Irvine California-based Kofax provides a diverse set of software and platform solutions for information intensive customer interactions.  With $297 million in revenues reported in 2014, the company has direct sales operations in 30 countries and 850 channel partners working in 70 countries. Kofax has also made strategic acquisition investments in recent years.  In February 2013, Kofax acquired Altosoft to add business intelligence and analytics, then shortly after in July they acquired Kapow for data analytics. In September 2014, Kofax further strengthened its capabilities by obtaining Softpro GmbH for e-signature and fraud detection.
The combination of solutions from Lexmark (with Perceptive) and Kofax for sophisticated capture, intelligent routing, data mining/analytics and other key business processes creates a very strong and comprehensive portfolio.

The Kofax acquisition reflects Lexmark’s ever-growing emphasis on software (including enterprise content management, business process management, document output management, search, intelligent capture software, vertical-oriented solutions); other high value offerings like laser products and MPS; and creating synergies among all three. The Kofax pickup also provides Lexmark with strong end to end vertical industry solutions such as financial services, insurance and healthcare, thus providing a foothold in the entire document lifecycle.     This is a significant move for Lexmark into software, considering a short time ago they were primarily print focused. This industry will continue to change and transform rapidly away from printed pages, and towards flexible, sophisticated solutions designed to solve business problems.

On June 4th, Kodak Alaris announced the addition of two new scanners to their product portfolio. The KODAK SCANMATE i1150 and KODAK SCANMATE i1180 are positioned as transaction based scanning devices. Each device is positioned uniquely to capture and then facilitate a business process.
