Mobile printing hot topic in September

In September, several vendors made announcements related to mobile printing, or with implications for printing from mobile devices.

Epson America announced that its latest inkjet devices are its first Mopria-certified printers. The company also launched the Epson Connect Solutions Finder to “help mobile users make sense of the numerous mobile printing solutions and apps currently available.

Samsung has acquired mobile cloud printing solution provider PrinterOn. According to Samsung, the purchase is expected to reinforce Samsung’s expansive mobile ecosystem especially for the company’s B2B customers. PrinterOn then announced a new version of its enterprise software with several additions, including wide area network iOS printing, IPP print server and Oracle compatibility, as well as support for Fuji Xerox MFP-based reporting when using Equitrac. I find much of what I read from reviewers to be very valuable and in some cases, insightful. As my way of paying it forward to others, I regularly write reviews of the hotels, restaurants, attractions, and places I have been to.

iOS 8 What Will it Mean for Photos?

On June 2nd, Apple announced that iOS 8 will become available later this year to download for iPhones, iPads, and iPods. This new version of iOS promises to be a major upgrade on the current iteration, iOS 7.

Apple’s billion dollar deal with L.A. Schools

In June, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) announced their plan to initially roll out 32GB 4th-generation Apple iPads to every student in 47 campuses in a deal worth $30 million. The district has 640,000 students at 1,087 schools, so over the next few years the school board has committed to spend hundreds of millions of dollars with Apple. The district’s plan is to equip every student with a device by 2014. Apple is selling the iPads, preloaded with education software for $678 each with a three-year warranty. Retail price for the 32GB iPad is $599. The board unanimously voted on Apple because the iPad rated the best in quality, was the least expensive and received the highest scoring by the review panel (made up of students and teachers). Other devices that could have been considered include Chromebooks, which can be argued to offer more value for just $249 retail price, netbooks, and also Windows-based laptops, which are potentially more versatile than a tablet starting at $400 retail.

Apple once again held true to its history of a September iPhone introduction. There was much speculation around the impending announcement and Apple delivered by introducing two models on September 11th — the iPhone 5c and the 5s. Although the overall excitement for some seems to be waning that never stops the true Fan Boys; the very day the phones were announced, there was a guy in Tokyo that lined up in front of his local Apple Store and lines continue to form wherever the phones will be available even though they will be available  on September 20th.
