Pokémon Go, an augmented reality (AR) app for Android and iOS, launched in the U.S. and Australia on July 6, 2016 – less than one month ago. Since then, the app has exploded in popularity with gamers and the media. In its short lifespan, it has made multiple headlines and is engaging a larger active user base than some of the most popular social apps like Tinder, Twitter, and even Facebook. Spontaneous social gatherings – some with thousands of people – have been happening around the world. Pokémon Go is taking the world by storm, and it is not even available in every major country yet (Chinese release date is still TBA).

Digital camera vendors are finally adding Wi-Fi technology to still cameras in meaningful quantities, and InfoTrends believes that connectivity is finally here to stay. As a proof point, in the first half of 2013, one-third of new cameras announced offer Wi-Fi connectivity as a feature. This is an increase from less than 15% in 2012. Yesterday, seemingly without warning, Facebook launched an iPhone app called Camera. With it, users can take pictures, apply editing filters, share them with other users, and “like” and comment on others’ pictures. If you’re thinking that this sounds a lot like Instagram, you’re right. If you’re thinking that Facebook has re-branded and re-released Instagram just six weeks after announcing its agreement to acquire the company for a cool $1 billion, you’re wrong. That deal hasn’t even closed yet, and Facebook Camera was reportedly in development before that news broke in early April.
