Today Xerox and EFI announced a move that extends their longstanding partnership: Xerox is selling its FreeFlow Print Server digital front end business to EFI. EFI will manage production and support of the existing FreeFlow Print Server and later will integrate it with EFI’s Fiery digital front end.
This next generation digital front end will integrate with EFI’s Productivity Suites, including print management information systems such as PACE, PrintSmith Vision, Monarch, and Radius ERP. It will also integrate with Xerox FreeFlow Core and XMPie workflows as well as third-party prepress solutions from Agfa Apogee, Heidelberg Prinect, and Kodak Prinergy. There is also the future opportunity to leverage JDF more effectively. EFI reports that its Fiery DFE is currently the only JDF certified digital front end. This opens the opportunity, through an API, to allow integration to any other applications.

A week passed since the successful conclusion of the International Woodworking Fair in Atlanta on August 27, 2016. With over 25 product categories such as custom wood working, veneers, flooring, doors, and accessories spread over more than 500,000 square feet. The show drew over 26,000 participants and 1,080 exhibitors some attended educational sessions and most walked the show in search for new product, innovations, as well as sourcing materials for their projects.

One good way of gauging a vendor’s marketing spend for a trade show is to see how much show floor space it has. Over the years, InfoTrends has measured booth size for shows like Graph Expo, Print, and drupa. With drupa 2016 less than a month away, we decided to repeat the exercise. This is how it works: we take measurements from the show floor map (in this case, the interactive drupa 2016 one at www.drupa.com). Then wherever possible we confirm this ranking through public statements or private confirmations from the exhibitors. We do our best to rank this as accurately as possible, but keep in mind that these are InfoTrends’ calculations, not official numbers. Color digital printing for packaging got a boost in Europe recently when a brewer long known for innovation, Martens Brouwerij (Belgium) publicized its use of a direct-to-shape print system to print PET bottles in full color, starting in June 2015. My first IPEX was in 1971. I was the marcom manager and in charge of the Compugraphic exhibit. The show was at Olympia and Earl’s Court. I will always remember (until senility sets in) entering the Victorian glass-domed Olympia and seeing the vast array of new printing technology. Phototypesetting was just coming into widespread use. These are InfoTrends’s top ten trends from PRINT 13:
- Who was there? Who wasn’t? Agfa’s departure from the show floor over the summer added another important company to the small cadre of vendors skipping the show (Heidelberg, Kodak, and Screen). In truth, Kodak actually did have a booth, a smallish one at the very back of the show floor, but it wasn’t what you would typically expect out of them. Of much greater importance was Kodak’s participation in others’ booths, including Konica Minolta (for Creo and Prinergy) and Adphos (for the Prosper Imprinting heads). And though the timing of Kodak’s emergence from Chapter 11 may have made a big presence unadvisable, it was nevertheless a missed opportunity to show off the new Kodak to its core audience. It is also clearly time for Kodak to name a new leader who will bring the market knowledge and vision for the next chapter in the company’s history. This has dragged on way too long. Read more »

This month consumers in Europe are beginning to see Coca Cola bottles on retail shelves labeled in a new way. Each bottle has the brand’s familiar swoosh graphic and red and white colors, but with iconic brand name reduced or cut out entirely. Instead, the words “Coca Cola” on the bottle have been mostly replaced by one of 150 most popularÂ firstÂ namesÂ in the country where the drink is sold. HP Indigo WS6600s are printing all the names, essentially a giant exercise in versioning–overÂ 800 millionÂ labels will be used between now and the end of Q3. Special kiosks will be on tour in the region so consumers can personalize their own Coca-Cola bottles. Coca Cola is also enlisting social media, first by encouraging Facebook users to create aÂ virtual personalized Coke can to share with someone, and then look for their own names on bottles in stores. The deal is historic, not just because it’s for Coca Cola, but because it likely is, in effect, the biggest color digital label print job ever.

This month InfoTrends’ on-line research will include an important addition – the Ultimate Guide to color digital label and packaging (CDLP) presses. The Ultimate Guide Online is a series of databases utilized by print and marketing service providers, as well as industry suppliers, to compare hardware and software solutions. A recent PrintWeek article reveals that Messe Dusseldorf, the organizers of the drupa trade show, are proposing a change in the frequency of the show from once every four years to once every three years. This is a bad idea. Perhaps to offset the proposed more frequent occurrence of drupa, Messe Dusseldorf is also recommending that the length of the show be reduced from fourteen to eleven days. This is a good idea.
Exhibitors have been asking for a shorter show, not a more frequent one. The most obvious benefit of going to a three-year cycle is not for exhibitors, but for the drupa organizers. Over a 12-year period the math works out like this: four 11-day drupas on a three-year cycle equals 44 days. Three 14-day drupas works out to 42 days. In the end there are more days on the show floor with the new proposal.
