What Makes a Great Company? Ask Adobe Systems and International Paper

The April 2013 issue of the Harvard Business Review has an excellent article on the three rules for making a truly great company. Deloitte consultants Michael Raynor and Mumtaz Ahmed analyzed extensive financial and operational data on more than 25,000 publically traded companies over a 45-year period and identified only 170 companies that qualified as a “Miracle Worker”. These companies were in the top 10% in Return on Assets (income divided by book value of assets) for a long enough period of time (either 16+ years for companies with 45 years of data or all 10 years for companies with just 10 years of data) to be more than just a random result.

Four Takeaways from Adobe’s “Summit” Digital Marketing Conference

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend Adobe Summit, the company’s flagship user conference for its digital marketing business unit. The Salt Lake City, Utah event attracted over 5,000 digital marketing professionals that use Adobe’s growing suite of marketing technologies. After $4 billion of investment between acquisitions and R&D over the past three years, Adobe used this year’s Summit to introduce the Marketing Cloud, five major solution areas–Social, Media Optimizer, Analytics, Target, Experience Manager–geared toward making marketers more data-driven, customer-centric, and digital.

After presenting 27 somewhat-integrated products at last year’s Summit, Adobe’s vision is coming into focus. It is clear that Adobe is aiming to be a strong competitor in the enterprise marketing technology space, especially as it relates to digital marketing. Marketo IPO Filing: A Sign of Things to Come?

On Tuesday, marketing automation technology provider Marketo formally began the process of making an initial public offering of its common stock by filing a confidential submission with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for review. If the IPO moves forward, it will reveal insights about Marketo’s strategy and operations and could lead to a flurry of M&A and other IPO activity in this fast growing segment.

The San Mateo, CA-based company has raised over $100 million in venture capital funding since its launch in 2006 and has been an aggressive competitor in the crowded marketing technology landscape. Marketo CEO Phil Fernandez and his team have done a good serving both small-and-medium business (SMB) and enterprise customers by providing a scalable marketing platform with an intuitive interface and a strong network of partners and integrations. This strategy has grown the company to $32.9 million in revenue in 2011–or 3,545% growth in three years, according to its Inc. 500 listing. Read more »

Building a Modern Media Company: Lessons from MediaNext

Many magazine publishers continue to face challenges in diversifying their revenue mix beyond print advertising, leveraging social media to engage with new audiences, and distributing & monetizing their publications across a growing array of mobile platforms. Last week’s MediaNext Show in New York City–a magazine media industry conference put on by FOLIO Magazine–tried to address these issues by tapping a substantial number of seasoned digital media experts for keynotes and sessions aimed to spark to help provide perspective on how magazine publishers can effectively compete in a marketplace that is increasingly digital and continuously evolving.

The event’s first keynote speaker–James Bankoff, Chairman and CEO of Vox Media, which is a pure-play digital media company that operates the SB Nation, The Verge, and Polygon properties–gave an insightful talk about building a modern media company. He outlined a number of key elements that drive the success of Vox’s properties, such as focusing on great design, being able to scale rapidly, hiring great talent to deliver high-quality content, and relying heavily on technology support real-time responsiveness and innovation–for editorial and advertising. According to Mr. Bankoff, Vox Media’s revenue is 95% ad-based, and he believes that its approach to adopting native advertising delivers greater value (and results) to advertisers compared to programmatic buying that publishers have less control over. Volly Launch Postponed Again… Now 2013

When it announced its third quarter earnings last week, Pitney Bowes said that it was deferring availability of its highly-anticipated Volly secure digital delivery service until 2013. Pitney Bowes originally told investors, analysts, employees, and partners that the service would be launched in the “second half of 2011.” In its earnings report, Pitney Bowes noted that it:

“has decided to add to and enhance its technology to provide additional capabilities that will improve the onboarding process for billers. This will result in improving the scalability of the service and facilitating biller density.”

There are two potential reasons for this. Either Pitney Bowes has lost focus on its U.S. launch while trying to license its platform internationally with partners like Australia Post Digital MailBox, or they have reached a point where they are too caught up in perfection to launch before the service is fine-tuned and enough brands have signed on.

Adobe Aims to Enable More Efficient Interactive Publication Workflows

Magazine publishers have been experimenting with digital editions for quite some time, typically through the use of PDF replicas of the print edition including varying degrees of interactive enhancement. Before the launch of the iPad and subsequent tablets, reading digital editions was largely relegated to the laptop. For road warriors always on-the-go who wanted to keep with their magazine subscriptions, this model worked well. For most other consumers, the experience wasn’t ideal, and digital edition adoption was limited to a niche audience. Post-iPad launch, however, tablet adoption soared, and publishers started experimenting with delivering their magazines in a format optimized for the native capabilities of tablets, including touch interfaces, powerful processors, and web connectivity.

Time Magazine, Wired, and many others came out with interactive digital publications on the iPad during or closely after its launch. These interactive apps featured print content tailored to fit within the screen resolution of the iPad and other tablets, as well as optimized navigation for touch gestures and the inclusion of rich media and animated components in editorial and advertising content. Even though these types of interactive apps have only been in existence since spring 2010, these features are the gold standard for tablet digital editions, and hundreds of publishers have taken the plunge to make their magazines more interactive. Adobe CS6 Release and the Impact of Creative Cloud

On April 23, Adobe Systems announced the latest release of its Creative Suite toolset version 6.0, and formally announced the launch of its new Creative Cloud service.  Adobe livestreamed a video kick-off where its president and CEO, Shantanu Narayen, spoke an “explosion of digital expression” in society, where the urge to create has never been greater than it is now. To highlight this point, Adobe leveraged statistics from a recent global research study it commissioned called “State of Create,” which investigated attitudes and beliefs about creativity in society. It used the study’s finding of a “creativity gap” to drive home the value of its Creative Cloud offering, which includes low-cost subscriptions to Adobe’s array of professional design applications.
