A White Paper Storm

Jim Hamilton
 May 22, 2012

In the days leading up to drupa I was awash in a storm of writing activity that resulted in four white papers that were published either right before or during the show:

Each of these is available as a free download from InfoTrends, just click the link above. All of these white papers relate to one or more key trends from drupa 2012, including high-speed color inkjet systems, hybrid inkjet configurations with offset or other processes, substrates for inkjet that open up new application opportunities, and the move to B2 format digital. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at jim_hamilton@infotrends.com.

What’s the Real Purpose of B2-format Digital?

A recurring theme at drupa 2012 is that many of the planned digital devices are intended as B2-format offset press replacements. This is puzzling positioning. Is there really a need for digital stand-ins for very efficient offset presses? The digital market, need I remind you, is built on values well beyond mere quick turnaround and cost-effective short runs. Production digital print is best leveraged when it facilitates full process automation, electronic collation, variable data, and the use of the digital printer as a virtual document archive. Designs that lack duplexing or use traditional offset feed and delivery systems miss out on some of the most basic digital print advantages.

Presstek Announces Larger Format Multi-Station DI Press

 Mar 19, 2010

Presstek announced this week that the larger format DI product that it first mentioned at drupa 2008 will be shown at IPEX in May and Graph Expo in October. The product is called the Presstek 75DI and is a multi-unit press with a 31.02″ x 23.62″ (788 x 600 mm) format. This size, which will fit 6-up letter, is even larger than the 4-up format that InfoTrends initially assumed it would be. Presstek has chosen a tower design that will allow up to ten colors (plus optional aqueous coating). After beta testing, Presstek expects the 75DI will be available prior to the end of 2010. In the future it expects to offer features such as perfecting (i.e., duplexing), printing with UV inks, and other types of coating. List pricing will start at around $1,175,000 for a four-unit press and go up from there depending on the number of stations and other options.
