One Billion Digital Cameras

The digital camera market is fast approaching a new milestone. According to InfoTrends’ estimates, the one-billionth digital camera will be produced this month. That is a lot of cameras produced since the first consumer models launched in the 1990’s. Congratulations!

Here are some other interesting Billion figures:

  • The world population surpassed the 7 billion mark in March 2012, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. (One person is born in India every 2 seconds!)
  • Over 1 billion photos are captured worldwide by digital cameras and mobile phones each day
  • Over 1 billion mobile phones with cameras were sold worldwide last year
  • Facebook is buying Instagram for $1 billion
  • Facebook users upload 1 billion photos every 3.3 days
  • The one-billionth app was downloaded from Apple’s App store in 2009, just 9 months after the store opened. In March 2012, Apple celebrated its 25th billion app download

If the digital camera market is going to make it to the 2 billion mark, it will need to overcome some looming challenges, such as market saturation in developed countries, encroachment by smartphones, and the need to connect cameras to imaging ecosystems.

Emerging countries, like China and India, offer camera vendors access to a new base of consumers. Incorporating Wi-Fi technology with a simple workflow and easy to use user interface will allow cameras to co-exist and compete with smartphones. The creation of intelligent imaging ecosystems will enable vendors to help their customers do more with their images. The digital camera market is changing. Vendors are no longer just in the camera business. Instead, the business is now about “helping consumers capture and share their memories,” regardless of device or service.
