Digital Imaging (DI) ’08 kicked off on October 15th 2008, in Burlingame, CA. The two-day conference brings together consumer imaging vendors, retailers and InfoTrends analysts to discuss current and future trends in the digital imaging ecosystem – capture, edit, share, print & view.

Ed Lee took a few minutes from his busy conference schedule to give a snapshot of the first day of DI ’08.

“DI 08 is going quite well. The speakers have done a great job and the panels have generated a lot of questions from the audience. So, audience participation seems to be up this year.

The theme of the conference is Connected Experiences, kicked off by my Market Overview presentation, and followed by the keynote from Doug Mack at Adobe who demonstrated Adobe’s transition from standalone software sales to a connected experience built around its new Photoshop.com sharing site. Software as a Serivce (SaaS) is a new direction for Adobe and promised a seamless experience of accessing your images on the PC or in the Cloud. Adobe is enabling Rich Internet Applications through its tools, like Flash and AIR, and through its own Photoshop.com service.”

Because the digital photo frame is a product near and dear to my heart — I asked specifically about the session that was entitled Digital Photo Frames Freeing Images from their Electronic Shoeboxes. The panel, moderated by Ed Lee, inlcuded speakers from Pandigital a photo frame vendor and FrameMedia a content service provider for wireless frames.

Ed remarked that the photo frame panel was interesting. Frank Muscatello (Pandigital) did a nice job at positioning frames from a retail category management perspective and Jon Feingold (FrameMedia) was able to show that driving user selected content to the frames opens up some interesting opportunities.
