Inkjet developments continue to dominate graphic arts trade shows. Graph Expo, starting this Sunday in Chicago, is no exception. Here’s a quick look at some of the inkjet developments I expect to see at the show.
Probably the most prevalent theme will be the products that will be talked about, yet won’t be there. HP won’t have an Inkjet Web Press at the show but will have news from that front (which will also be a benefit to HP partner Pitney Bowes and its IntelliJet 20). Fujifilm (booth 627) won’t be bringing the J Press 720 to the show. Instead they will take interested parties to their demo center in suburban Chicago. Fujifilm will focus its booth exhibit instead on a new wide format inkjet product, the Inca S40. Kodak’s Prosper 5000XL won’t be at the show, but Kodak will be exhibiting a CMYK version of its Prosper S20 Imprinting System in the Adphos booth (#2518) right adjacent to Kodak’s (#2018). Screen will not have its own booth but will be exhibiting the Truepress Jet520 with Konica Minolta (booth 2227). TKS (booth 2261) announced the JetLeader 1500 Digital Ink Jet Web Press, but will not be exhibiting it. Yet even Heidelberg (booth 1200) will have wide format digital color from VUTEk in its booth, though the major digital print story for them will be how the company is positioning the Pro C901 following its partnership with Ricoh. Ricoh (booth 2600) will show improvements to the InfoPrint 5000 VP. Océ (booth 1213) will exhibit a ColorStream 3500 on the show floor. Xerox (booth 200) will show a new roll-fed color printer that is built upon its phase-change inkjet technology. They will also take analysts to the beta site in Iowa City after the show. (I’ll have more to report on this when I return.) This product is unrelated to the recent aqueous inkjet announcement made by Fuji Xerox. Memjet inkjet technology will make its appearance in a color printer from Neopost (booth 4002) and also in a wide format printer from a company to be named later. Memjet heads have mainly been used in office printers and label printers to date. This show will mark the first time that it’s been seen in a wide format product. MGI (booth 3619) and Scodix (booth 4422) will be using inkjet technologies that apply innovative coatings or special effects. And there will certainly be much more to come in regard to inkjet announcements at Graph Expo.
Announcements of all types will be coming out at a rapid pace in the days leading up to the show. We display many of those on InfoTrends public web site. InfoTrends clients can leverage InfoTrends’ private client news site. We’ve been tagging all of the Graph Expo news to make it easy to find. If you type the words “Graph Expo 2011” in the ‘title search’ feature in the news section of the client web site you will get an up-to-date list of announcements. Tomorrow we will publish a pre-show view of the top trends and announcements for clients. Some announcements, of course, will be under non-disclosure until the show opens and cannot be discussed until then. We’ll follow up with coverage on these items once the show begins. I look forward to seeing you at the show!
