When thinking about taking photos, in year’s past the first thing to come to mind was using a camera. But today since almost every mobile device has a camera, the traditional camera isn’t the first thing people actually pick-up when looking to take a photo. For many years InfoTrends has been conducting an annual mobile imaging survey to understand what camera people turn to when taking pictures in various scenarios –overall, every day, and special occasions.

The survey first asks what cameras, mobile and/or traditional, are owned by people. Then a series of questions is asked of people that own multiple types of cameras to find out what is their go to camera in a variety of situations – overall, every day, and for special occasions. The smartphone is dominating overall and every day photos, while the digital camera holds onto special occasions.

Because most of today’s smartphones offer 8+ megapixel resolution and are more than able to take “good enough” photos for most people, especially for every day photo taking needs. InfoTrends recommends that handset manufacturers focus on other aspects of the camera experience, including low-light capture, optical zoom, and improved flash. As mobile videography gets more popular, advanced video capabilities, like easy editing videos and 4K capture, will take mobile video to the next level. Traditional cameras need to change this smartphone most often photo taking scenario or else they will stay packed away until someone remembers to take it out for a special occasion.
