HP Decides to Cut Bait with Snapfish

Given the choice to either “Snapfish” or cut bait, Hewlett-Packard has chosen the latter.

HP announced last week that it will sell its snappily-named online photo business to District Photo while simultaneously preparing to split into two separate companies.

Snapfish offers services such as online photo sharing, storage, management and editing, and also allows users to purchase prints of their photos. HP, which acquired Snapfish from District Photo in April 2005, has not disclosed the purchase price, announced the terms of the sale or revealed Snapfish’s revenue.

Palo Alto, Calif.-based HP expects to complete the sale in the second half of this year. It will still handle printing for Snapfish after the sale is finalized, and will offer the HP Connected Photo app, which was developed by Snapfish, on its consumer PCs.

Beltsville, Md.-based District Photo, a digital imaging services company, first bought Snapfish in 2001, according to its website.

Last October, HP announced that it would split into a pair of companies: Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, which will sell commercial tech products such as data-center hardware, business software and cloud services; and HP Inc., which will be the personal computer and printer business. The sales of PCs have declined as smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices have grown more popular, and HP has dropped from the world’s largest PC seller to the second-largest, behind China-based Lenovo.

HP said it expects to complete the split by Oct. 31, the end of its fiscal year.
