On Wednesday June 18th, Skyword, along with partners Conductor, Outbrain, and Traackr, held “Content Rising”, an event geared toward enterprise marketers in Boston, MA. The purpose of Content Rising was twofold: first, to raise brand awareness for the event sponsors and second to further educate marketers on the best strategies for content marketing.
While there is much buzz in the media on content marketing techniques and opportunities for brands to leverage content to pull in consumers, many of the marketers in attendance commented that they are still trying to refine their strategies and are not yet fully comfortable with the tactic. Gaining confidence in using a content marketing strategy was a strong theme of the night and also provided the vendors in attendance the opportunity to educate the audience on the best strategies for execution. Amazon Fire Phone
June 18th marked the introduction of the Amazon Fire phone, Amazon’s first entrance into the smartphone market. The Fire phone features a 13 MP (front facing) camera with an f/2.0 lens and optical image stabilization. The base model features 32GB of storage and comes with free unlimited Cloud storage through Amazon’s Cloud Drive. The handset itself has a 4.7-inch display featuring Gorilla Glass, aluminum buttons, and a rubberized grip area. Performance wise the handset features a Quad-core Snapdragon 2.2 GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, and dual stereo speakers with Dolby Digital Plus for a virtual surround sound experience.

At a recent launch event in San Diego, CA HP unveiled plans to “reboot” its wide format digital printing portfolio with a new modular thermal inkjet (TIJ) platform. Additionally HP launched new wide format technical printers, production software, and a single print driver for their DesignJet family, but the headliner was a wide format printer from HP that will compete in the single-pass wide format segment.

On Monday June 16th, OKI Data Americas introduced the ES9465 and ES9475, http://www.okidata.com/oki-data-introduces-es9465-and-es9475-smart-mfps. Two A3 color LED-based MFPs available exclusively through the dealer office equipment channel. This announcement expands Oki’s product portfolio, offering BTA channel partners with a more robust feature set of both A3 and A4 devices within the mid to large workgroup segment.
The new ES9465 and ES9475 are among the smallest footprint, lightest weight, and quietest of any comparable devices within their product segment. They offer standard print/copy/scan and optional fax capability, and have a rated color and mono print speed of 35 ppm (ES9465) and 50 ppm ( ES9475)- making the ES9475 OKI’s fastest color MFP device to date. In addition, there are three optional finishing capabilities including an inner-finisher, multi-staple finisher, and saddle—stich finisher. The (ES9465) MFP has a suggested retail price of $22,879, while the (ES947)5 MFP has a SRP of $28,079. Both models include a standard RADF, an external interface enabler, and full yield supplies.

The announcement of annual results is always a good opportunity to provide an update on company strategy or present a new organisational alignment. The latest Heidelberger Druckmaschinen annual press conference, however, had far deeper implications than that.
A main message to investors, debtors, and the whole graphic arts community was that Heidelberg delivered on its promise of returning to profitability. Although the net revenue of â‚¬4 million was not particularly impressive, it is nevertheless an encouraging sign because it implies a turnaround. In the last five years Heidelberg has accrued a net loss of almost one billion Euros. While financial analysis will certainly have a feast on the numbers, the announced strategic reorganisation and several other organisational moves have important implications for the future of the company.

On June 4th, Kodak Alaris announced the addition of two new scanners to their product portfolio. The KODAK SCANMATE i1150 and KODAK SCANMATE i1180 are positioned as transaction based scanning devices. Each device is positioned uniquely to capture and then facilitate a business process. As paper usage within business matures and transitions, the time to capture valuable content from remaining pages increases. Giving away free photo prints is very common in the photo industry. The top retailers and online sites typically offer free print promotions a few times during the year, and many give away free prints just for signing up to be a member of their respective sites. The goal of these promotions is to get consumers to print more, of course, but they also serve as a platform to promote higher-priced products like photo books, cards, calendars and canvas prints that have stronger profit margins.
One key trend that will dramatically affect the output market in general and the print in particular over the next few years is the growing use of smartphones as primary cameras. People are taking more photos than ever thanks to these devices, so the potential is there for the print market to get a much needed boost from their use. With the ease with which photos can be shared electronically from these devices, there is also the potential for print to decline because people may rely on viewing, sharing and archiving their photos electronically instead of with prints.

I’ve spoken at two recent graphic arts events where something unusual happened. Chief Executive Officers of billion-plus dollar companies were in attendance speaking to customers and prospects. This is not only unusual, it’s also very symbolic, and it underscores the importance of a kind of event that is happening more and more frequently: invitation-only customer/prospect events held at a company-owned or partner facility. Customers and prospects are flown in, wined & dined, shown the latest product updates, and given a strategy update by senior executives. And in case you were wondering, the marketing dollars spent at these events are very likely those that were saved by not participating at IPEX or other graphic arts trade shows.

Broadridge Financial Solutions and Pitney Bowes announced today that they have formed a joint venture and launched a new technology platform named Inlet. Inlet is being billed as a platform “that will make it easier for companies to distribute statements, bills and other documents to consumers via participating online channels.” Essentially, this means that the approach is to act as a behind the scenes secure digital mail aggregation service that will be made available to businesses seeking expanded online services functionality for their customers.
