Xeikon Certifies Yupo Film; Note on Certification Protocol

Bob Leahey
 Dec 14, 2010

Xeikon, whose headlines this year have mostly focused on its new 3000 series of color label presses and their new toners, had some media news recently. Briefly, the company announced this month that it has tested and qualified polypropylene substrates from Yupo Corporation of America for use in the new printer series. The new facestocks are available in translucent and white versions, and are fully recyclable. While Yupo is not as well known to clients as Xeikon is, the company, which is the U.S. offshoot of a Japanese parent, is a top supplier of synthetic paper, for both digital and analog printing. The Yupo products are technically film but have a paper-like feel and are tear resistant and water-resistant. In conventional printing they are used for sales collateral, restaurant menus, maps, and other applications, as well as in-mold labels and other labels printed on narrow analog webs. In digital, the Yupo substrates are well known facestocks for industrial thermal transfer labels. Meanwhile, the “YupoBlue” synthetic paper product is certified for use in the HP Indigo label presses. Read more »

Heidelberg Puts Off Digital Print Partnership Decision(s) Until 2011

Jim Hamilton
 Dec 10, 2010

The German web site print.de reported today that Heidelberg will not make any decisions about digital print partnerships until early 2011. The news came during a presentation to European print industry magazine editors. Back in May at its IPEX press conference Heidelberg had said that it was searching for digital print partners (emphasis on the plural) and would make some decisions before year’s end. We’ve been waiting since then. Graph Expo passed. What a great opportunity to gain the spotlight even though Heidelberg didn’t have a booth there! Then early in December Océ and manroland announced a partnership, and still there was no news from Heidelberg. We’d been hoping for a Christmas news release, but that will have to wait. And it may be a bit of a wait. print.de reports that a likely time for the announcement could be the Digimedia show in April in Dusseldorf. Read more »

Is this the beginning of the end for printing at home?

Zac Butcher
 Dec 8, 2010

We are moving house this coming weekend and in the general clear out process we have decided that the printer will not be making the journey. It’s only 18 months old, a colour laser and barely run in. It has years of life left and it came with a free mono toner replacement that has not been opened. Yet in the short period of time since purchase we have, without a conscious effort, entirely removed the need for a printer at home. With smartphone numbers growing rapidly and tablet PCs expected to start eroding PC shipments from 2011 I believe we are currently witnessing the beginning of the end for printing in the home.
