Nov 1, 2017

The annual PDN PhotoPlus Conference & Expo (PPE) was held October 26-28, 2017 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City.

PhotoPlus Expo (PPE) draws a sizeable crowd from the surrounding metropolitan area and has become one of the East Coast’s largest photography, filmmaking and digital imaging events. The show highlighted 250 exhibitors and was expected to draw nearly 20,000- attendees. Canon, Nikon and Sony once again were PPE show floor anchors, as they were the vendors closest to the main floor entrance, and occupied the largest exposition real estate. Although this is one of the biggest photography events on the East Coast, there were no new cameras introductions during the expo but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a lot to do and see on the show floor. On May 17th, Nuance announced eCopy ShareScan 6.0, an update to their popular capture and workflow solution. eCopy ShareScan offers sophisticated tools while retaining simplicity for any customer. Nuance has added new features for productivity and security, designed with the prevalence of ad hoc capture, mobile workers, and the need for custom workflows in mind. To serve those looking to automate, Nuance eCopy 6.0 features innovations in the mobile space, “learning worker” level workflows, easy deployment and maintenance with added security features, and extensive integration with Microsoft Office 365.

Mobility

Nuance eCopy can now be integrated with Nuance Business Connect, the mobile application for iOS and Android. Subsequently, users can capture a document with a mobile camera and access workflows via mobile devices with support for form data entry and document signatures. These documents can then be processed via Nuance eCopy to content management systems, email services, collaboration tools, and more. This allows remote workers to work as effectively as those in the office.

Workflows

The Visual Workflow Editor and Personalized Workflow combine to make workflow design simple and easy for every worker. At the administrator level, the Visual Workflow Editor offers a guided building experience, drag and drop functionality, intuitive possible steps, and a built-in test simulator. The Personalized Workflow allows any user to configure connectors via an easy to use wizard for custom “send to folder” workflows. RapID remembers user’s preferred or recent settings, simplifying repetitive document tasks.

Deployment and Security

To ensure eCopy serves each aspect of an organization, Nuance has considered concerns like support and security. To keep servers from being overwhelmed, eCopy enables industry hardware load balancers like Citrix Netscaler. Nuance has also added several security features. Content-based security warnings monitor scanned documents and flag predetermined classified information via an email. Enterprise-grade security standards, TLS 1.2 and SNMP v3, are now supported as well. The integration with Windows Active Directory also furthers security, ensuring only authorized users have access via secure session log-on. For those already using eCopy, upgrades are as simple as installing eCopy 6.0 over eCopy 5.0, keeping all saved workflow settings.

The trend toward business process automation is highlighted in the InfoTrends Future of Office Print study, which suggested that more organizations are discovering the benefits of document software solutions. Nearly two thirds of respondents indicated that their companies have taken steps to remove, simplify, or automate document-related business processes. Nuance answers that growing demand with this new version of eCopy, a scalable solution to simplify document workflows in and out of the office. Nuance eCopy ShareScan 6.0 will be available to partners in June, and satisfies the needs customers looking to gain control of document processes, empower mobile workers, and manage costs without sacrificing security.

Keeping things Simple with HP Digital Capture

Anne Valaitis
Dec 4, 2015

On December 3rd, HP Inc. announced new offerings designed to create a more efficient and streamlined capture environment. According to HP Inc., these new solutions will target deployment of digital capture in a variety of business environments in a simpler, more cost effective manner. In addition to the benefits and economics of a digital capture solution, HP also made an announcement of new scanners and MFPs with advanced features designed to tackle paper-centric workflows.
Data from the recent InfoTrends Multi-Client study entitled, The Future of Scanning, revealed that of the 500 respondents, 47% stated that shifting from paper processes to electronic was a business priority. Paper processes, often thought of as antiquated and cumbersome are being targeted as areas of transition and automation. Vendors and providers are seeking not only to identify inefficiencies in processes but apply convenient low cost solutions as well.

HP pursues the goal of delivering a full featured digital capture solution without the need of investing in a complex, broadly featured system. In addition to a lower cost of implementation, a rapid deployment of the solution is expected with the help of templated workflows to common process areas.  The HP Scan Configuration Service, when bundled with an installation of HP Embedded Capture, provides for a low touch workflow process initiation. Template-based scan flows are available for industries such as healthcare and financial services with more said to come. These templates can be used for common, repeatable tasks within these often demanding process areas with little or “light” configuration. The new service functionality is embedded without the need for an additional server or heavy infrastructure burden. HP has set the pricing at a one-time fee of $25 per device, when bundled with the purchase and installation of HP’s Embedded Capture.

In addition to the new JetAdvantage Solutions, HP announced three new ScanJet devices and an expansion of their A3 MFP portfolio. The ScanJet model Pro 2500f1 and 3500f1 are personal desktop flatbed scanners replacing aging models in this segment class. The ScanJet 4500fn1 is an entry level network connected scanner with features such as scan to mobile via wi-fi and wi-fi direct, HP JetAdvantage Capture App and paper handling using HP EveryPage technology suite. The Scanjet 4500fn1 is also replacing aging models in the segment class of devices.

Model Scanjet 4500fn1:

The HP MFP S965dn and HP MFP S975dn models are for light production printing environments and workflow onramp with support for HP Capture and Route. Each is 65 and 75 page per minute print speed respectively with a variety of finishing options available; fold, insert, trim, saddle stitch, as well as punching. The 10.1” touch screen offers a high resolution preview and retractable keyboard. Up to 150k pages monthly provide the highest print volumes in the HP MFP portfolio.
Model S900 Series:

An easy, low cost solution to digital capture, along with pre-built templates for common business process workflow automation is an attractive solution as businesses of varied sizes are working through activities related to conversion. InfoTrends believes businesses will continue to seek out ways to transition laborious processes to a more streamlined, automated approach. Offering solutions that can address this, in a low cost, uncomplicated way with paths to expand will serve as a successful strategy for vendors competing in our industry.

HP Introduces Next-Generation LaserJet Printers

Christine Dunne, Deborah Hawkins and Barbara Richards
Mar 10, 2015

Today, HP announced the global launch of a “re-engineered, sleek” new series of A4 color LaserJet printers intended to make businesses more efficient. The devices—which consist of one MFP and three single function printers—are a significant departure from previous LaserJet products. Comprising new “JetIntelligence” technology, they take up 40% less space; use up to 53% less energy; and wake up, print, and duplex “in a fraction of the time.”

The “enterprise” M552 and M553 single function printers, for instance, offer 100% duplex productivity—meaning that in addition to printing 40 one-sided pages per minute they can achieve 40 images per minute spread across two sides of the page. HP says the announcement represents its most significant laser printing re-engineering since the launch of the first LaserJet in 1984.

HP Flexes Its Packaging Muscles: Part 1

Ron Gilboa
Nov 24, 2014

HP’s Graphic Arts division demonstrated its ongoing commitment to the future of digital printing for packaging applications by announcing a partnership with Kama, a major manufacturer of finishing automation.. The announcement came a part of a recent open house that Kama held at its Dresden, Germany headquarters; also at that event, Kama, a 120-year-old manufacturer of automatic die cutters, hot foil stamping systems, and folder-gluers, revealed its collaboration with HP Indigo to launch a prototype of the FlexFold 52, a folder-gluer that will become commercially available in Q2 2015. During his introduction, Kama CEO Marcus Tralau proclaimed that “packaging is coming home” to Germany with this new technology introduction.

The FlexFold 52 offers automatic setup for rapid changeovers from one job to the next, making it ideal for producing short runs of folding cartons. Setup is handled via JDF and JMF commands, and the device can automatically adjust the length and width of the folding elements before gluing them together at a speed of 200 meters per minute with nearly whisper-quiet operation. Developed in collaboration with HP Indigo’s team, the system complements the capabilities of the HP Indigo 30000 printing system when producing folding carton applications.

Big Data Trend Continues with New Pharos Solution

Other Posts
Jun 4, 2014

Bea·con (noun)

: a strong light that can be seen from far away and that is used to help guide ships, airplanes, etc.

: someone or something (such as a country) that guides or gives hope to others.

This term is fitting for Pharos’s next generation of Mindful Print Solutions (its new definition of MPS). InfoTrends recently spoke with Pharos President Keith Nickoloff, CEO Kevin Pickhardt, and CTO Fred Schempp to discuss the release of this new offering. Pharos sees this product as “the next evolution” of its user-driven strategy. Mr. Nickoloff continued to emphasize that “devices don’t print, people do.” Looking at printing from that perspective, it starts to make sense how an analytics-based solution like Beacon can help organizations make smarter and more cost-effective printing decisions. Like a beacon, the solution can help guide users on a new path.
