Why Aren’t You a Member of the Business Technology Association? BTA Celebrates 90 Years of Dealers Helping Dealers!!!

We shall start where all of the great journeys throughout history start, at the very beginning.  It was August of 1926 and a group of independent typewriter dealers…What is a typewriter? Google it Millennials, I don’t have time to draw you a picture. Where was I?  Oh yes…

It was August of 1926 and a group of independent typewriter dealers gathered in Kansas City, Missouri, to form an association that would one day become the Business Technology Association.  By 1933, the Association had grown so much that it was decided a name change was needed. The National Association of Typewriter Dealers became the National Typewriter and Office Machine Dealers Association (NTOMDA), a decade later in 1943; it became the National Office Machine Dealers Association (NOMDA).  Fun fact, new products announced in the September issue of the NOMDA NEWS in 1948 included such items as:

  • The Tape Recorder — a compact, magnetic tape recording and playback machine designed for non-professional use.
  • The Wire Recorder — a new, portable, low-priced model. The combination phonograph/wire recorder reproducer claimed to have 12 essential features of sound reproduction.
  • The Photo Copy Duplicator — designed to produce letter- and legal-sized exact facsimiles of anything written, typed, printed, drawn or photographed in a matter of minutes. Claimed to produce more than 30 finished copies an hour at about five cents per copy. Portable. Had a self-contained darkroom.

Fast forward to present day, the Business Technology Association (BTA), led by Executive Director Brent Hoskins and a Board of Directors made up of independent dealers/entrepreneurs, serves office technology dealerships, resellers, manufacturers, distributors and service companies. Its core members — office technology companies — consult, provide services such as managed print services, managed IT services and sell hardware, software and supplies with the primary goal of helping businesses optimize business information workflow. Through the association’s various educational programs, information, research, legal services, publications and guidance, BTA member dealerships are positioned to be the premier source of the office technology used by businesses throughout the United States every day.  Bottom line, this association is about dealers helping dealers.

So, if you’re reading this and you’re not a member, my question is: Why Not?!  This is seriously what they call a “no-brainer” because for a measly $430 a year…hold on, let me start this part again.

In addition to all of these fabulous benefits, the BTA holds five District Events per year (I know I said no more shameless plugs but this one isn’t about me, thus it doesn’t qualify as shameless), in the West, East, Southeast (traditionally one in first quarter and the annual Fall Colors event in North Carolina) and the Mid-America event. This year the Mid-America event will be held in BTA’s home city of Kansas City, Missouri, on June 8th thru June 10th to celebrate the association’s 90th Anniversary. These events feature industry leaders, networking opportunities, educational sessions and opportunities for exhibitors to meet one-on-one with attendees.

So, let’s go back to the beginning.  Founded in 1926…let that soak in for a moment people…founded in 1926!!!  Another fun fact, did you know that of the Fortune 500 firms in 1955 vs. 2014; 88% are gone?  Gone people, gone!  My Peeps at BTA have been diligently serving the independent dealer community since 1926!!!  And…AND…they all still look great!  Valerie, Teresa, Mary and Elizabeth, they don’t look a day over 30!  Brent and Brian…well, let’s just say they look great for 90 and we’ll leave it at that. :)

Congratulations to the entire staff at BTA and the countless volunteers, who are too many to name in this blog, for your many hours of hard work making the association successful.  A special shout out to Brent Hoskins for his dedication to and stewardship of the association.  Last fun fact, Brent also doubles as editor of Office Technology magazine.  So when he retires, the Board will have to hire two people to back-fill him; good luck with that. Brent is someone I both personally and professionally have a tremendous amount of respect for and is also someone I believe could be the nicest person on the planet. Much continued success to the Business Technology Association in 2016 and here’s to the next 90 years of dealers helping dealers!

 

 

Annual Camera Wrap-Up – Mirrorless Models March In

For the last three years we have done a year-end round up of the cameras that were introduced. It’s always an interesting exercise to take a look back on what features and technologies vendors have chosen to feature in their products.

Although there were many, 72, cameras introduced this year, the number pales in comparison to years past. That number of models, although impressive, is over 20% lower than the 98 models introduced in 2014. Just a few years ago in 2012, there were 146 models introduced almost double the number of cameras introduced this year (Source: InfoTrends U.S. Camera Model Tracker). Just because there were fewer cameras released doesn’t mean there weren’t some great new cameras.

Point & Shoot Cameras Appealing to Future Buyers….Even the Younger Ones

It’s hard to not see an article these days – online or print – that talks about how the mobile camera is taking over as the everyday camera, some go as far to say that mobile phones are killing the traditional camera. The iPhone “Shot on iPhone” marketing campaigns are even promoting that their camera phone photos are good enough to turn into huge outdoor billboards, I’ve seen a few along the Boston city highways recently. But it’s not all doom and gloom for the future for traditional cameras just because everyone is using a camera phone doesn’t mean they have forgotten all about the camera. Read more »

Russia’s weak economy speaks disaster

InfoTrends latest analysis shows the market for SF & MF Printers in Russia contracted 8.5% in 2014 versus the year prior. That equates to more than 330k placements. The highest decline was in office laser placements (-9% yoy) suggesting that the weak economy is hindering investment for the majority of companies. Added to that is the continued depreciation of the Ruble which financial analysts suggest fell more than 90% against the USD in the Calendar year 2014. Blamed as the reason why businesses are not investing, it is now also a reason not to invest. The fall-out of the Ruble is mostly attributed to the conflict in Ukraine and the resulting Western Sanctions as well as the low oil price. Read more »

Funai Japan Launches New Inkjet Printer with up to 50% Savings on Ink

Funai Electric, the worldwide licensee for Kodak Consumer and SOHO Inkjet Printers, announced earlier this week it is launching its first Kodak-branded product this month. Funai has a long history of manufacturing inkjet and laser printers for a number of brands around the world. They have built more than 130 million inkjet printers over the last 16 years. According to Kiyoshi Chinzei, Funai Electric’s General Manager, Office Solutions, the KODAK Verité 55 is the first in a line of new and innovative printing products from the company.

Product Features

According to Funai, the new inkjet printer provides end-users with up to 50% savings on their printing costs with standard large capacity (XL) color and black cartridges that doubles the print yield. The XL cartridges will print 360 color pages and 400 black pages.  Funai is offering $50 worth of large capacity ink cartridges included in the box compared to standard size ink cartridges from other leading manufacturer’s printers priced below $100.

The printer has built-in wireless connectivity for printing, scanning and copying.  Users can scan or print from a smartphone or tablet in a single swipe using Flick Print with the Kodak Verite Printer App, available

for Apple and Android devices.  It also features wireless direct and local Wi-Fi connectivity to enable wireless printing from mobile devises through Kodak’s Verite Printer App with support for Apple AirPrint and Google CloudPrint.  The new printer has a recommended duty cycle of 1,000 pages and print up to 10ppm in monochrome and 4.2ppm in color with a draft print speed of 20ppm and 15ppm respectively.  Scanning to multiple file formats is available from Windows, MAC and Mobile Apps.  According to Funai, the printers, will be available in North America initially through Wal-Mart stores then Tesco in the U.K. later this year.  The Kodak Verite 55 All-in-One Inkjet Printer has a suggested retail price of $79.47.

Quest Toward Mobile Print Simplification Continues

Recently, an acquaintance had a near-meltdown when she couldn’t figure out how to print from her Windows tablet to her Dell printer. On Facebook, she implored friends to help her figure out what she was doing wrong—indicating she needed printouts for work, pronto.

She isn’t alone. Take a look at the user review section of any mobile print app, and you will encounter plenty of comments around printing issues (e.g., app doesn’t work, formatting is incorrect, printer isn’t supported). Indeed, recent InfoTrends research indicated that the top perceived barriers to mobile printing center around technical and compatibility issues.

Assuming you needed to print something from your smartphone or tablet for personal reasons, which would be the largest barriers to doing so?

Google’s “Mobilegeddon” and the Importance of Mobile-Friendly Web Design

This week, Google made changes to its mobile search algorithm, an event which the public dubbed “Mobilegeddon.” In the new algorithm, Google considers whether a website is “mobile-friendly” in ranking search results. Mobilegeddon is a wake-up call for many businesses that have either neglected mobile design or are not even aware that their websites are poorly designed.

While the new algorithm only affects searches on smartphones, businesses cannot afford to lose out on mobile, which already accounts for 60% of U.S. digital media time.[1] Earlier this year, comScore reported that mobile search accounts for 29% of all U.S. search activity, and 20% of that comes from smartphones. Various estimates put Google around 65-75% search market share, with 80-90% share in mobile search (thanks in large part to the Android OS). In fact, about half of all Google searches are believed to be mobile searches. Despite the apocalyptic hype around Mobilegeddon, this is neither the first nor the last update to Google’s algorithm. It is, however, the most significant update since 2011, when Google Panda began factoring the quality of web pages into search rank.  Read more »

Highlights of Xploration 15, the Customer Communications Conference

Last week, customer communications conference Xploration 15 hosted around 350 participants in Orlando, Florida. This annual conference is a major industry event with more than 60 educational sessions for vendors, service providers, and enterprise attendees.

The educational sessions covered a broad range of CCM topics including workflow and automation-related technology, e-presentment and payment technology and innovation, hosted/cloud managed models, as well as strategy considerations for outsourcing versus maintaining in-house operations. InfoTrends hosted two sessions that covered a review of highlights from our annual customer communications research, and insights on the importance of CCM in an increasing connected world.

HP Opens New Graphics Experience Center in Barcelona

On March 16, 2015, HP EMEA celebrated the grand opening of their new Graphics Experience Center in Barcelona, Spain. This facility is housed at the EMEA headquarters of HP’s Graphics Solutions, which is also HP’s largest R&D lab outside of the U.S. More than 3,000 employees work at these facilities of which more than 450 are in R&D. HP has transformed its existing demo center into a customer facing facility called Graphics Experience Center with 60 end-to-end graphics solutions on display from HP and its partners. At 6,000 square meters, the new facility has almost double the floor space of the old one. This blog describes the highlights of the event.

Highlights of the EBDA Seminar 2015

On February 26, the European Business Document Associated (EBDA) organized a seminar to discuss the future of print and customer communications. This event took place as a parallel event to the Hunkeler Innovationdays 2015 in Lucerne, Switzerland. Such parallel events are a perfect opportunity for people to participate in as they easily can combine it with a visit to the Hunkeler Innovationdays. InfoTrends was invited as being one of the main speakers at this seminar together with three other industry experts.
