At this time of year vendors and users of digital print technology have a spate of events that qualify as vendor-specific tradeshows, ones hosted or sponsored by individual equipment suppliers. Among the best known are two that just took place, namely Hunkeler Innovation Days (February 20-23 in Lucerne) and Dscoop (March 1-4 in Phoenix, Arizona, for HP users). A third event, coming soon, is a pure play in digitally printed packaging and well worth visiting—the Xeikon Café that will take place in Belgium on March 27-30.

Label Expo, the premier tradeshow for the label industry, will take place September 29 to October 2 in Brussels. Now decades old, this is the show that never seems to fade, and also one where the role of digital printing technologies always seems to grow. In this era of equipment suppliers holding their own trade shows, Xeikon added to the list by recently hosting the 2015 “Xeikon Café: Packaging Innovations” at its main plant in Lier, Belgium. The event’s title connotes an intimate setting, but the scene was also a dynamic one, dedicated to digital label and package converting and with over 500 attendees and dozens of market partners. Xeikon drew from far and near, with converters and suppliers from the U.S., India, China, Australia, and Latin America giving the whole event a global look and feel. Meanwhile, before and after the Café (March 10, 11, 12), Xeikon held separate events for European brands and for design and marketing professionals, upping the total guests for the week to over 700.

Color digital printing for packaging so far has been mainly for primary package printing—first in color digital labels, where brand owners now spend about $3.2 billion annually, and more recently in folding cartons and flexible packaging, where digital print is really just getting started. Another digital category, though, is emerging, and that is corrugated package printing, mostly for secondary packs and displays, and typically produced by specialist converters. Corrugated is now clearly a color print market, and one where several inkjet vendors are now participating.
One of those suppliers, Hewlett Packard, recently hosted over 100 guests in Atlanta for a conference about color digital printing for corrugated packaging. While most attendees were prospects—dozens of corrugators and sheet printers, most from North America, but some from as far as China—there were also current users of HP Scitex flatbed inkjet printers for corrugated, and there were also HP technology partners, such as Esko (cutting Read more »

InfoTrends recently interviewed 40 current users of B2 presses and also surveyed 200 prospects for the technology in Europe and North America, in order to understand the status and outlook for B2 digital systems, which are available now from Delphax, Fujifilm, HP Indigo, and Screen, with more to come. The results are charted and interpreted in the new report, Opportunities and Challenges in B2 Digital.
