HP Inc. to buy Samsung Electronics’ Printer Business

HP Inc. announced today they are set to buy Samsung’s printer business for a reported $1.05 billion. HP Inc. went public with a number of announcements today during their Global Partner Conference in Boston, Ma continuing for the next few days. As part of the Samsung announcement, HP is set to gain about 6,000 Samsung employees once the deal is finalized. HP sets its expectation to close within 12 months (according to Enrique Lores HP, president of imaging and printing). Of the 6,000 employees, approximately 2,000 are research and development engineers, 1,000 are sales and support staff and the remaining are in service and manufacturing, Lores said. As of this writing, Samsung has not shared the revenue that had been generated from their printing business.

Xerox Announces Workflow Solutions Spanning a Variety of Vertical Areas

Today Xerox announced a new set of workflow automation industry solutions in higher education, retail banking, and manufacturing; advancements in personal and office productivity capabilities; as well as ConnectKey innovations aimed at enhancing the managed print services (MPS) offering. Xerox also announced new revenue opportunities, tools, and operational processes for MPS channel partners.

On May 5th, Xerox held a call with industry analysts to discuss the new offerings prior to the official announcement. Mike Feldman (President of Large Enterprise Operations) highlighted the recent financial performance of the company’s document outsourcing business—which includes managed print services (including workflow automation) and centralized print services. Mike noted that in the first quarter, this business experienced one of its best quarters financially. The business, which generates approximately $3 billion in annual revenue, achieved 5.0% year-over-year growth on a constant currency basis. Half of this additional revenue occurred within the larger enterprise customer segment, while the other half stemmed from their indirect channel MPS business.

Keeping things Simple with HP Digital Capture

On December 3rd, HP Inc. announced new offerings designed to create a more efficient and streamlined capture environment. According to HP Inc., these new solutions will target deployment of digital capture in a variety of business environments in a simpler, more cost effective manner. In addition to the benefits and economics of a digital capture solution, HP also made an announcement of new scanners and MFPs with advanced features designed to tackle paper-centric workflows.
Data from the recent InfoTrends Multi-Client study entitled, The Future of Scanning, revealed that of the 500 respondents, 47% stated that shifting from paper processes to electronic was a business priority. Paper processes, often thought of as antiquated and cumbersome are being targeted as areas of transition and automation. Vendors and providers are seeking not only to identify inefficiencies in processes but apply convenient low cost solutions as well.

HP pursues the goal of delivering a full featured digital capture solution without the need of investing in a complex, broadly featured system. In addition to a lower cost of implementation, a rapid deployment of the solution is expected with the help of templated workflows to common process areas.  The HP Scan Configuration Service, when bundled with an installation of HP Embedded Capture, provides for a low touch workflow process initiation. Template-based scan flows are available for industries such as healthcare and financial services with more said to come. These templates can be used for common, repeatable tasks within these often demanding process areas with little or “light” configuration. The new service functionality is embedded without the need for an additional server or heavy infrastructure burden. HP has set the pricing at a one-time fee of $25 per device, when bundled with the purchase and installation of HP’s Embedded Capture.

In addition to the new JetAdvantage Solutions, HP announced three new ScanJet devices and an expansion of their A3 MFP portfolio. The ScanJet model Pro 2500f1 and 3500f1 are personal desktop flatbed scanners replacing aging models in this segment class. The ScanJet 4500fn1 is an entry level network connected scanner with features such as scan to mobile via wi-fi and wi-fi direct, HP JetAdvantage Capture App and paper handling using HP EveryPage technology suite. The Scanjet 4500fn1 is also replacing aging models in the segment class of devices.

The HP MFP S965dn and HP MFP S975dn models are for light production printing environments and workflow onramp with support for HP Capture and Route. Each is 65 and 75 page per minute print speed respectively with a variety of finishing options available; fold, insert, trim, saddle stitch, as well as punching. The 10.1” touch screen offers a high resolution preview and retractable keyboard. Up to 150k pages monthly provide the highest print volumes in the HP MFP portfolio.

Lexmark International Set to Acquire Kofax Ltd

In what seems to be shaping up as an exciting year in document and information technology, late yesterday it was announced that Lexmark International would seek to acquire Kofax Ltd for approximately $11 a share, or $1 billion. Upon news of the agreement, Kofax shares spiked 36%.  This is most certainly a disruptive move by Lexington, Kentucky-based Lexmark, and it positions them to be a “powerhouse” in intelligent capture and document processing while adding sophisticated platform capabilities for BPM.

Lexmark’s acquisition spree kicked off in 2010, when the company acquired Kansas-based Perceptive Software (for a reported $280 million) with the goal of transitioning from a hardware-centric vendor to a solutions provider. Perceptive Software was a major provider of ECM software and solutions with specific strength in the higher education, healthcare and government sectors and its Image Now software platform offers a broad range of workflow solutions.

The marriage offered clear synergies for growth at a time when Lexmark’s revenue had slumped following the decline of the inkjet market.  Lexmark’s subsequent exit from the inkjet business reaffirmed the importance of new revenues streams. Lexmark, with its global infrastructure of direct & indirect channel for printing hardware, was an excellent fit for Perceptive with its advanced software solutions and vertical expertise. Both came from positions of strength in the medium sized business sector reaching up to the enterprise.

 

 

 

Irvine California-based Kofax provides a diverse set of software and platform solutions for information intensive customer interactions.  With $297 million in revenues reported in 2014, the company has direct sales operations in 30 countries and 850 channel partners working in 70 countries. Kofax has also made strategic acquisition investments in recent years.  In February 2013, Kofax acquired Altosoft to add business intelligence and analytics, then shortly after in July they acquired Kapow for data analytics. In September 2014, Kofax further strengthened its capabilities by obtaining Softpro GmbH for e-signature and fraud detection.
The combination of solutions from Lexmark (with Perceptive) and Kofax for sophisticated capture, intelligent routing, data mining/analytics and other key business processes creates a very strong and comprehensive portfolio.

The Kofax acquisition reflects Lexmark’s ever-growing emphasis on software (including enterprise content management, business process management, document output management, search, intelligent capture software, vertical-oriented solutions); other high value offerings like laser products and MPS; and creating synergies among all three. The Kofax pickup also provides Lexmark with strong end to end vertical industry solutions such as financial services, insurance and healthcare, thus providing a foothold in the entire document lifecycle.     This is a significant move for Lexmark into software, considering a short time ago they were primarily print focused. This industry will continue to change and transform rapidly away from printed pages, and towards flexible, sophisticated solutions designed to solve business problems.

 

HP and NEAT ® Partner to Bring Organization to the Home Office

This week HP introduced the new model Officejet 8040 e-All-in-One Printer. A complete system designed to make the home/small office more productive, efficient and highly organized. HP and NEAT have entered into a new partnership that would provide the NEAT cloud based filing service with an all-in-one printer as a full package. This product is designed to center on the home office, a large and growing area for HP with this device being a focal point to provide additional tools to enhance the work experience and even augment some personal home printing as well. The addition of NEAT, according to HP, will greatly improve the typical home office user experience and address some key pain points. As business grows more paper is produced and received and can create a disorganized and messy work environment that is hard to manage.

As part of this combined offering, at $399 the HP Officejet 8040 printer will include a 3-year NEAT cloud service subscription for free. The connection to NEAT is provided to customers through an installation process, activation of the included hard drive, and mobile app deployment. The setup process is designed to ensure the customer is prepared to begin using the device and the NEAT service account. The account provides access to the NEAT cloud, mobile access and features such as unlimited scanned documents using the control panel from the Officejet 8040.

Other ways to bring documents into NEAT are the mobile app, this allows you to use the camera function on your smartphone and taking a picture of a document, or by using the NEAT application on your PC or MAC. All the documents will use the NEAT smart organization system which includes the (in document identification) ID2 software, reads the documents making it key word searchable and will also extract vital data from items such as business cards and receipts. These systems can aid in finding and searching for content and documents within the NEAT cloud system.

To differentiate the filing solution, according to HP, is the inclusion of a 1tb hard drive. For customers that may feel reluctant to scan certain documents to the cloud, the hard drive gives the opportunity to also store files locally. The hard drive is portable and can be removed from the Officejet 8040 when needed.
HP and NEAT have come together to offer customers a printing solutions that is meant to be simple and easy to use providing greater organization to home offices. Productivity, efficiency and time savings are all being promoted with the solution along with the FREE cloud access that would otherwise be $5.99 a month from NEAT.

On June 4th, Kodak Alaris announced the addition of two new scanners to their product portfolio. The KODAK SCANMATE i1150 and KODAK SCANMATE i1180 are positioned as transaction based scanning devices. Each device is positioned uniquely to capture and then facilitate a business process. Xerox Safe Courier

In March this year Xerox announced Safe Courier, a solution developed to help customers transmit documents securely, and directly from a mobile device. Mobility solutions and services continue to rapidly evolve providing real value for business-to-business and business-to-customer engagements.

Harnessing the power of the network!

Panasonic announced on July 8th, the release of its KV-SS1100 network scanning solution. The KV-SS1100 is a standalone device that integrates with Panasonic’s portfolio of standalone document scanner devices to then convert into a network-enabled capture device, no matter what the speed of scanner chosen.


The SV1100 features a 7” LCD touchscreen with a 1024×600 resolution and a scratch-protection sheet, and a hardware button for quick scanning.

Panasonic claims that the SS1100 will eliminate the need for laborious tasks like manual scanning and data entry by providing the wired or wireless network connection businesses need to keep their documents flowing. With the KV-SS1100, files are sorted, edited, auto scanned and filed to various folders based on customizable presets.

Hardware devices with the ability to “upgrade” without the need to replace the entire device are very attractive for company’s not interested in making new investments. There is tremendous benefit and value to fitting a large LCD touch panel into an existing hardware footprint, it can allow for shortcut buttons for common tasks and predefined workflows suited for a variety of vertical markets and processes that are heavily paper intensive.

Vertical markets such as Healthcare have many key process and paper ingestion areas that are vital to handling hardcopy items such as patient records. Speed and accuracy of entering patient data, along with regulation and compliance in healthcare are high priority according to the InfoTrends Business Process Automation Study, specifically HIPAA requires that patient data remain private and confidential. The practice of scanning and capturing documents and content, at point of origination, is looking to meet these requirements. And the added bonus of having an adjunct device that can aid in the capture of data by creating a workflow friendly integration is vital in any business process.

Kodak has a NEW buyer for Document Imaging

Kodak to sell its Document Imaging business to U.K Kodak Pension Plan


Kodak has entered into an agreement whereby it will sell off its Document Imaging and Personalized Imaging business units to U.K Kodak Pension Plan, KPP. As part of the continued restructure to exit bankruptcy, Kodak will sell off its Document Imaging business for $650m in cash and non-cash consideration. Overall, the agreement settles approximately $2.8 billion of claims by the defined benefit (DB) pension plan against Kodak and certain of its affiliates.
