HP Gets Smart about Mobile, Buys Palm for $1.2 Billion

palm-hp-logoHP made a move to become a bigger player in the smartphone business by acquiring Palm, a seasoned player in the smartphone field. This move may seem out of left field to some, but it reminds others that HP has been in the mobile space for years with its iPaq handsets.

Under the terms of the agreement, HP will purchase Palm at a price of $5.70 per share of Palm common stock. This cash transaction is worth $1.2 billion and has been approved by the HP and Palm Boards of Directors.

Ricoh National Dealer Meeting – Convergence 2010

Sparing no expense, Ricoh held its annual dealer conference at the beautiful Palazzo hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada during April 19th-22nd. This was the first time that Ricoh brought together the Ricoh Family Group indirect channels and also the first chance to meet the new IKON leadership of the company. Making a great impression was something Ricoh had to do. Ricoh traditionally held separate events for its Ricoh, Savin, and Lanier channels. Tonejet Up and Running at Ball Packaging

This month we have a small update on Tonejet, Ltd (Melbourn, Hertfordshire, UK), the developer of a proprietary electrostatic drop on demand technology that was the focus of some intriguing news last year. In July 2009, the company publicized its first major deal, with Ball Packaging of Germany. Under the terms of that agreement, Tonejet and Ball were to jointly develop a single pass, CMYK print system, based Tonejet Technology, to print metal cans at Ball’s manufacturing plant in Hasslock, Germany, with actual production to begin in Q1 2010.

InfoTrends spoke with Tonejet managers recently to check on the status of that custom installation, and learned that the printer is indeed up and running at Ball. The first commercial runs of CMYK onto metal cans began there in early April. The Ball customer will have to remain unnamed until sometime in May 2010. HP Extends Its MES Offerings

On April 20, HP made a few new announcements to help strengthen its Managed Enterprise Services (MES) offering to its customers. HP has been offering Managed Print services through its direct organization for almost 4 years now. HP executives say that the company currently has approximately 2,500 customers and is managing approximately 18.5 billion pages under HP MPS programs. Back in September of 2009, HP formally named its program Managed Enterprise Services, in which executives reinforced the company’s Optimize, Manage, and Improve Workflow strategies with new solutions and an extended alliance with longtime partner Canon. This alliance was reinforced with an announcement made last week between HP, Canon, and Fedex Office. This new offering will bring about 12,000 devices into 1,800 locations where customers will be able to utilize these print and output solutions in a near site location. Read more »

What Is HP’s ColorPRO Technology Strategy?

Two recent announcements shed some light on the progress that HP has made on the development of third-party produced papers that are enhanced for use on the T300 Inkjet Web Press:

  • Georgia Pacific launched a line of treated uncoated stocks using ColorPRO technology. The ColorPRO brand denotes that the papers employ an HP-developed technology that facilitates high-quality print output on HP’s T300 Inkjet Web Press. The line of papers is called Spectrum Web Inkjet and is available now in the United States. (Link to Georgia-Pacific news)
  • Appleton Coated will develop coated papers for the T300 Inkjet Web Press using HP technology under the Utopia brand. These papers will include matte and dull finishes designed for textbook, publication, direct mail, and other commercial printing applications. The substrates are currently in production trials and are expected to be available in mid-2010 in North America. (Link to Appleton news)

The Georgia Pacific release was notable in that it mentioned the ColorPRO brand. The Appleton release did not. The reason behind this is relatively simple. The Georgia Pacific stocks are uncoated. The Appleton stocks are coated. In response to a question from InfoTrends HP clarified that ColorPRO as a technology and a brand is for uncoated stocks only. Appleton’s coated stocks will employ an HP-developed technology, not ColorPRO, and therefore will not be part of the ColorPRO technology brand. Read more »

Say Hello to Adobe Creative Suite 5

On Monday, Adobe unveiled its fifth iteration of its Creative Suite family of products (commonly referred to as CS5) and all of its various packages: Design Standard, Design Premium, Web Premium, Production Premium, and the all-encompassing Master Collection. These packages include key creative software tools that many of us are familiar with, including Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Flash, Dreamweaver, and many more. A lot of things have happened with Adobe since its launch of Creative Suite 4 in September 2008, including acquisitions of Business Catalyst, a platform for independent designers to help launch Websites for their clients, as well as Omniture, a widely-used online marketing and analytics solution (more on that later). The company had some issues getting people to upgrade from CS3 to CS4, which can be attributed to a mix of the economic recession, as well as perceived view by end-users that an upgrade would not add more functionality to an existing install. Xerox Annual Partner Conference

Xerox recently held it’s annual partner conference where they brought together the production and office solutions partners for the first time. Last year Xerox made significant shifts to their business by internally combining their office and production groups breaking down these silos of their business. With that change also came bringing two separate partner groups together, office and production as one business unit. Leading this new group is Elizabeth Fox, Vice President, Solutions Business Team. The conference on the partner side consisted of about 1/3 production peripheral/accessories companies, 1/3 production solutions and 1/3 office solutions vendors. The supplies industry has a new player and it comes ready to play and invest, Golden Gate Capital. On April 14, 2010, Golden Gate Capital, a private equity investment firm based in San Francisco (which makes sense given their name), announced the acquisitions of Clover Technologies Group and West Point Products. This news could be arguably viewed as combining the largest and second largest aftermarket players in the supplies industry. Golden Gate has approximately $8 billion of capital under management and plans to become a perpetual fund for these two major supplies companies. Now with the backing of Golden Gate, potential opportunities include investing in research and development, new products, and more acquisitions domestically and globally. We have been told that Golden Gate does not plan to buy these two companies and then sell in a few years as sometimes happens in these situations.
